Final Presentation.

During our interviews we met Nazli and her husband. one of the stories form nazli that stood out to us was their 3 month travel from western europe to eastern china on their honeymoon. during this entire trip nazli had to limit herself with buying souvenirs because they were backpacking and space was limited. because of this we saw an opportunity to reduce the clutter of sentimental objects but still preserve the stories and memories associated with them.

A solution we developed is the memory beads. these come in a variety of colors and can be strung together as a bracelet or necklace. because they are individual machines, you can collect as many of these beads to store you memories as you want. you can also pick and choose which ones you want to wear on you at any given point.

Some of the features are its ability to record voice, video and images. it is easily operated by controlling one scroll button with one hand. all the data can be wirelessly backuped so that you wont have to worry about losing your recordings and memories. video voice, and images can be projected so that you can carry your stories and share them whenever and wherever you want to. biometrics keep your memories personal so you can feel confident about its security.

design Research week14 ! Rehearsal

Nowadays, people are more and more not satisfied with they own. Gradually, we become more and more greedy and what everything. When we got too many things that we started to think "hey, do I really need this stuff?" So that's why we start to discuss this "right-size" and "enoughness" issue. To review our design research procedure, we construct our project by step by step. From the beginning to now, from the Alemany flea market to memory beads, through many lectures and discussions, I believe that I've learned a lot of things and experiences. Also, thanks for IDEO's research method, it can not only use on design research but also other career. I trust that this method could use on my father's company to help him solve issues after I go back home.

Design Research week12 ! Prototype designs and findings

work in sections on final presentation, run in new group wiht final project!!!

I have to say sorry to H.I.P. because we left it and say good bye.

However we are going to our final project! The "memory beads"!

Actually the "memory beads" is also the original idea from the super sentimental group. I feel like I am going to reunion with my separated child after many years.

Last week every group had interview with other 3 interviewees and received new feedback. Also the last group revised the modify the bead's shape and function. The bead became more fashion and functional. Although many people may ask why we want to develop this bead, it is just like the normal recorder. However, it is not a common recorder, it is a recorder with sentimental!

For example, there's one day your grandmother told you a family story. Situation 1: It is so unbelievable and astonishing. Situation 2: It is so lovely and so heart touching. You was so shock and impressive but did not have anything to write it down. Then memory beads is your best choice to record everything!

I wish this product would be real many years ago that I really could record my grandmother's voice to instead carrying the Buddha beads which she gave me before she passed away.

We believe that the voice could make people feel more emotional. Without the visual, you only can use hearing to pay attention on things. It would improve you to memorize things hardly. Also it is wearable, so you can share your story when you walk on the street.

After rebuilt the model and talked about what's the next step. We thought we've been ready.

About Prototype interviewing

Alice

· 1.wheel to control the size of the holograph:

o for example, if I went to the pyramids and want to make them a table piece, I don’t want them projected full size, but like trinket size.

2.what about the speaker?? sound?:

o we also have recorded sound – wifi/Bluetooth can connect our projector to outside audio system

3. size of projection?:

o room size projections or smaller

4. every time you turn on and off it will save file/new file to prevent mishaps with the files

Clare

1.virtual screen/interface, why not just control everything virtually?:

· 2.what if I don’t want to wear my camera over my ear all the time?:

· 3.how about a GPS tracking/satellite recording system instead of camera?:

o like cloud computing

· 4.thinks the size of the projector is waaaaay too big

· 5.don’t need the lens, projectors now don’t even have that shape, very 80s.

Kelvin

1.internet connection possibilities:

o where you can upload videos directly on to the internet

2.google map – like map tracking of vacation routes:

o people can see where you went on vacation

o follow along

o like/dislike function, grading system like “yelp”

· 3.shaky images if you’re carrying the camera around:

o maybe something like anti-shock software or the projector can filter out movement to create the perfect hologram

· 4.camera can connect to the TV or other screens:

o but then it’s only a 2D image – like video camera

· 5 5.too big:

o make it into an accessory on the cell phone or other electronics

o use the cell phone screen as the interface controller for the holographic images

6.battery life?:

o will you bring this on vacation? if so, what about battery life and how to recharge the machine.

7. interaction:

o other people can see your files

o maybe turn it into a game

§ like if you recorded unwater scene – scuba diving

§ come home, you can play with the fish

8.information exchange

o share our memory sticks

9.Customizable interface

o like backgrounds, button looks

o share new created appearances

design Research week10 ! Brainstorming and improvisation!

The value of prototypes resides less in the models themselves than in the interactions they invite.---Michael Schrage, Serious Play

Base in HWMs, how to make the prototypes.

a. rapid prototyping

1. inspire, evole execute

2. rough, rapid , right

r: just enough profuction value to express the idea

r: whtat can oyu build in 10m 20 m 30m

r: focus on the right thing, what the least mature part of our idea? the hardest to explain?

b. Low risk: conducted with a safe audience, at a minimal cost(guideline: under $100)

c. Quick and easy: easy to build, easy ti test( guideline: under 1 hour)

d. Generative: on target to answer a question that will grow the idea

e. making the prototype! use every different material to simulate your prototype

I still remember that when I was a kid, I dreamed that one day i could be a inventor. Maybe it is the reason that I like to do design and some handcrafts. Model making is always one of my interests because you can use your two hands and ten fingers to fix tens and hundreds parts together and finally it became a tank or a robot. Now we are going to make three prototypes. Base on the lecture, we can follow the steps and main ideas. However, there is always a better way and better idea comes out when you are thinking. then after the discussion, we completed our three prototype as above.

Super Sentimental Group!

Taking Brainstorming with other group in other section brings us more ideas.

When many people provided so many ideas as same time, it was a tremendous view.
But it was really efficient and soon we got so many post-it and even could classify them.
I think these method is really useful to make a second brainstorming for process. With other people's help, the original group is no longer stuck in their rethinking.

design Research week9 ! Brainstorming!

Let me briefly recall my memories for "What to do with what you know"

1. Grand strategy = what you do with what you know:
  1. to learn how people "simplify",
  2. to learn how poeple "right-size",
  3. to learn how people "value things"

2. How might we help people to---
  1. reuse and exchange things?
  2. simplify their material lives?
  3. right-size sensibly?

3. How might we help designers to
  1. not-make more something insignificant
  2. make better judgement about what to design?
  3. develop better material for sustainable design?
  • how might we design for reuse?
  • how might we design for meaning?
  • how might we design for keeps?*

4. Dual Grand Strategic goals
help people to---
  • reuse and exchange things
  • simplify their material lives
  • "right-size" sensibly

help designer to---
  • design for reuse
  • design for meaning
  • design for keeps
  • robust design solutions/ generate new design principles

Make HMWs and more specific.

design Research week8 ! Opportunity map!

Let's ask the world!

After the lecture I started to think about what is the world market. There is a world factory in China, and so many countries want to product their product just because it has low cost. Every company wants to have a high profit and does not care about the details. but do you really know what you want and what you need? When this company produce so many stuff to let you choose, what will be your decision? Let's ask the world and also ask ourselves!

Then we started to make our opportunity map.
According to every different interviews for last time. we combined every clue that connect to sentimentality and memory. we found that indeed the time is the main element that influence every single part. Time is not just the time. it is like the essential factor for everything.

Also, the most important part was that we notice that people would have been sentimental and had memory with the object. Once they move to other place or got a fire and burned down all the house. they must need to make the decision to throw away these stuff or lost it.

The best way to deal with these is to detach it and take out the sentimental and memory part. then we completed our opportunity map. and comes out the how might we/s.

Since last time I mentioned about Kensai Engineering, now i believe more about that emotion
is going to be a necessary part in design process. As some designer in Taiwan and Thailand, they designed many kinds of product to make life more interesting and plenty with fun. They add motion and sentimental things into their idea. Like they know how to use the brick which is from your old house(your house has already been pulled down ) to trans it into other form and let you can preserve it. It is also recyclable and more eco friendly.

Why not follow this way?

Make HMWs and connect them into a opportunity map.

design Research week7 ! Develop opportunity spaces and "How Might We" statements

To see what's the most necessary element for the interviewee, we have analyzed two interviews and put them into the chart.
Make the venn diagarms, 2x2.
About the "Grand Strategy". It would be more like "Grand Strategy"--> many "Strategis" --> then divided into several "tactics". The idea about "Grand Strategy" is like a top idea and divided to other small ideas.

After we indicated and classified each catalog. We found that actually we had at least seven different event. These events are symbolized each human emotion or desire. Then we choose which catalog we were more interested. (memory and sentimentality).

I found that nothing more that these events that could describe human. We have sentimentality, burden and so on. One of my friend studied Kensai(emotion) Engineering. People are really easy to be change when they face on some sentimental stuff. For me, I totally agree this situation. That' why I choose this catalog to develop more possibilities.

15.10.09

Design Research week6 ! After interview!

We are going to discuss about "who", "what", "when", "where", "why", and "how". Who are they? What did they do? When are we going to? Where is the interviewee? Why they did these? How they did these?

After the interview, we had a discussion about these 2 interviewees. Although they were 2 different family and different background, we found there were some similar life styles between them. They mostly eat at home, the sentimental items are more important for them. Branding is important to husband. They are not impulse buyers. Also, they love traveling. We put our observations, quotes, and the similar parts on the foam board.

I found our interviewee she and her husband might not be so rich but she still chose this hotel-style studio to live.

The studio is not so big but enough for two people to live. There are one small living room with a kitchen, one bad room, one bathroom, and two closets. The furniture is new; the wood floor is shining; everything looks so nice. We believe that the rent here is expensive.

She said she would rather take some part time job such as clean dishes to get extra money. According to the probe, we can see most of the things are categorized into "NECESSARY" part. There are only two things she doesn't need. They are CHOPSTICKS and CHILDREN. I think it's because of the culture and their life style. At least, they think they do not want a child now.

Base on the interview, both of them collects things. The wife likes jewelry and the husband likes sneakers and Simpson DVD. Also, we discover that they changed their collection within their ages. For example, the husband collected basketball cards when he was teenager; however, when he grew up and had enough capability to play real basketball games, he stopped collecting these cards.

14.10.09

Design Research week6 ! New interview!

It's the second interview. The interviewee lived at Folsom St., I think it's in SOMA area.

This time we investigated about the "Treasure and JUNK" discussion. "This is a general list of
questions to guide our discussions. During the interview process, more tailored questions will be
added specific to the background and interests of each interviewee. 15 minutes will be allotted
for each section."
We focused on 4 sections. "Treasure", "Junk", "Buying", and "Value". The new interview guide is including above 4 topics. The questions we made are related to treasure-junk connection. When will the treasure become junk? When will the junk become treasure? What's the treasure for people? On the other side, what is the junk? Also, we designed a probe to let interviewee take a test to categorize what things they needed or not in daily life.

First, we choose many kinds of stuff such as utensils, the money, the electronic products, food, and supplies. Then the interviewee would have 15 minutes to think about what thing is necessary or unnecessary and put the card into 3 sections. Finally, we record the result.

took photos in Golden Gate Park.

Yesterday, my friends and I went to Golden Gate Park to take some pictures.
They hoped these photos could inspire them to their logo design assignment.

Unfortunately, the weather was so cold and windy. But we met a lot of trained squirrels.
They did some human gestures and stood up as asking you something to eat.

Although the weather is so bad, it's still a nice day.
